This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Friendship Hugh Black Books Reviews

This book is old style, a bit pedantic, but it had some really great thoughts. I used it in preparation for a series of posts I did on the topic of Friendship. Very useful.
Delivered concisely and powerfully, this books contains bits of wisdom from many of history's greatest thinkers, as well as conventional wisdom that it is easy to lose track of. Looking for more out of your relationships? This book will help you deepen your appreciation for those you care about, and give you the state of mind and the attitude to make those relationships strong, deeper, and more satisfying.
I got this book through an recommendation and didn't realize it was a bit old. I liked it a lot. Reminded me about how valuable friendship is. The last chapter about friendship with Jesus is inspiring.
This short book written in 1898 is chock full of timeless wisdom on friendship (and life in general). It covers every aspect and form of friendship including the ultimate friendship - with God. I have read it several times and given away several copies to friends. It's a must-have in my library to refer to often, especially when I need a reminder about what really matters in life. It's my all-time favorite book.
I bought the book because of the succinct chapter titles that seemed to encapsulize friendship. When I opened the book, I saw immediately that this was going to be challenging reading; there are large blocks of text that make it difficult to focus, at least for me. But it contains many gems of truth if one has the time and tools to dig them out.

Written in old English wording, Shakespearian-like in places, one has to think very carefully to glean what is being communicated. I had to re-read sentences several times. The content is very good, and the point is made that to truly have a friend, one must first of all have the common ground of spiritual agreement, of like values. I appreciate the fact that the book is Christian, and I appreciate how Mr. Black addresses what criteria to look for in forming friendships.

In the chapter titled "The Wreck of Friendship," I enjoyed this wording "In one way or another the loss of friendship comes to all. The shores of life are strewn with wrecks. The convoy which left the harbor gaily in the sunshine cannot all expect to arrive together in the haven. There are the danger of storms and collisions, the separation of the night, and even at the best, if accidents never occur, the whole company cannot all keep up with the speed of the swiftest."
Three chapters (out of nine) are the most helpful The Choice of Friendship, The Eclipse of Friendship and The Higher Friendship. While this short book is written in an ornate, looping style, it is is not without its charms. The author quotes frequently from the works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, Coleridge and the like, and especially the New Testament.
Hugh Black was obviously a good person and thus, he is a little naive, or maybe a tad too generous toward human nature.
Or maybe our world has become worse since this book was written. Certainly, the word "friend" has been co-opted by
social media to the point of meaninglessness and relationships based on proximity seem to be short-lived.
Don't expect standard self-help fareYou won't find much directly pertaining to flat-out users, those working out psychological needs by trying to be your friend or foul- weather "friends" who like you better when you're down and out.
It does make you think, though, especially about your own motivations.
And he ends with the Truth God is the best, most reliable friend if you seek Him, and to this end, I recommend reading "The Interior Castle" by St. Teresa of Avila.
.
I am thrilled with the condition of this book and the contents. Truly a literary gem!
This book is so relate to given the very detached world of Social Media. With the transient nature of our lives it's so important to understand what makes friendships work, as well as reflect the missing ingredients & the "what went wrongs"
