Coast to Coast with a Cat and a Ghost is an autobiographical account by Judy Howard, that follows the author's road trip across country after the death of her loving yet at times abusive husband.
When her husband of twenty-five years, Jack, passes away, Howard is faced with an overwhelming sense of loss. She takes to the road in her Winnebago on a journey of self-discovery accompanied by her cat, Sportster, and Jack Incarnate, a life-size stuffed doll she creates with an eerie resemblance to her late husband. During their travels she and Sportster experience the beauty of the land as she resolves her troubled memories through conversations with the doll. She comes to terms with her deep love for her husband despite the abuse that was part of their relationship and discovers how she became a stronger woman for it.
The audiobook is a narrative, both of physical travel and of emotional and spiritual evolvement, says Howard. It leads the reader through the hills and valleys and provides insights to fear and bravery. Howard aims to weave an emotionally-charged narrative with humorous anecdotes and a unique perspective on life, engaging and inspiring the listener.

Loved reading this book (which I finished in the early hours, this morning! I particularly loved this book from a fellow RVer's perspective. Six months earlier, my husband and I followed this same route that the author took, stopping short of Florida on I-10, so I nodded as I read about her reaching each landmark we had. I've fallen in love with her cat, by now, and can't wait to read her next book. Brava, Judy Howard!Product details

Coast to Coast with a Cat and a Ghost (Audible Audio Edition) Judy Howard Anne Johnstonbrown Judy Howard Publishing Books Reviews
On the whole this is an interesting well-written account of Judy's journey, both actual and metaphorical, following the death of her husband. The greatest weakness in writing style and language mechanics were early on in the book, and the main thing that led me to read on was that I am also a recent widow finding what "normal" means in my life now. As I got into the book, I became an eager reader. She interwove memories and travel adventures extremely well, and I became enchanted with her traveling companions, Sportster the cat and Jack Incarnate, her hand crafted passenger seat occupant. I trust that her next book will have a smoother start as she has more writing experience under her belt, and I look forward to reading it.
Coast to Coast with a Cat and a Ghost, is a poignant, honest memoir. Judy Howard's story is filled with hard-earned wisdom; her descriptions are detailed and poetic. After the death of her husband, Jack, Judy travels alone, in their RV, from California to Florida and back. She is accompanied by her cat, Sportster, and a home-made stuffed doll dressed to look like Jack. Her conversations with her traveling companion, "Jack Incarnate," are delightfully creative.
Judy's flashbacks are seamless. Her memories of life with Jack are both painfully honest and inspirational. She flawlessly weaves reality, memories and dreams throughout this well-written, captivating memoir.
After meeting the author at an RV rally and discovering that she and I share our travels in our RVs with felines and hearing about her journey I bought the book for my . If I had not been at a rally with events to attend it would have been a start to finish read for me. Her honesty about her marriage to Jack and the and the challenges she faced in her life with him and after his death earned my admiration and respect. I shared her anxiety and her feelings of empowerment during her cross country journey. It was as if I was in her rig enjoying the cosiness and serenity at the end of a day as she and Sportster settled in for the night. She captured the excitement of each new day as she saw new sights and met new people. Her interactions with Jack's ghost revealed how much she grew into self confidence in addition to the humor that his 'presence' in the passenger seat provided as she told people along the way about him.
I look forward to future writing from her and hope that our paths cross again somewhere out there on the road.
I found Judy's book a delight to read. It is funny, heartwarming and adventurous.
A great message about marching on and following your hearts desires even after the loss of a loved one.
I love Judy's sense of humor and her descriptive details of what she encountered on the road, but also of the many thoughts that whirled through her mind about past, present and future as the tires of her RV took her rambling down many roads.
This honest story of a woman finding herself after the lost of her husband is a great read that leaves you with much to think about. She's a good writer and is unafraid to expose her inner thoughts and feelings to the public. I love that kind of honesty. Her feelings about her husband, herself, and events helped me to understand her better. She's an admirable woman. I look forward to reading more of her work. I would have given her 5 stars if it had not been for the disconcerting errors probably caused by the formatting required by . It would break my concentration about her and her feelings whenever I came upon them and was frustrating. Hopefully, her next book will be better emitted and/or formatted and if the story is as good as this one I'll gladly give it 5 stars.
Since health issues reared their head in my life, I miss road trips and camping so much. (I tent camp, btw.) So, to try to satisfy part of my craving for the asphalt rushing under my little truck, I have been reading road trip books. This one I had no idea what to expect, but was intrigued by the title. I was not disappointed. The book did cover travel, but it was really a vehicle for her "coming of age" as a woman, a widow. She grew on this trip, big time, and it seemed to me that the trip surely must have helped her plow forward in life.
She and I don't have the same problems at all, but her courage and resolve and honesty are inspiring to me. I am sure I will think of this book in the future as I plow forward.
This is an excellent story of a woman finding herself after the death of her spouse, and the author pulls no punches when she describes life with her late husband Jack. We learn that while he had an abusive side, he could also be loving and tender, and even in death his opinion is still important to her. As she makes her way across the country in her motorhome with her cat Sportster she grows in self-confidence with every mile and realizes that while a big part of her died with Jack, that which is left is stronger and able to carry on alone. LIfe without Jack will be different. Not necessarily better or worse than it was with him, but a life she comes to embrace as she puts the past in her rearview mirror and looks through the windshield and into the future.
Loved reading this book (which I finished in the early hours, this morning! I particularly loved this book from a fellow RVer's perspective. Six months earlier, my husband and I followed this same route that the author took, stopping short of Florida on I-10, so I nodded as I read about her reaching each landmark we had.
